Something new for...

Since summer is coming up pretty soon, I was thinking on getting a new book to read. I came across with this book called Girl in Translation while working on a research for my Literature class.  The book is written by upcoming Asian American writer Jean Kwok. The story centers the life of Kimberly. A little girl that moves with her mom from Hong Kong, China to Brooklyn, New York. Life in New York becomes with many difficulties for both Kim and her mom. The two struggle to adjust with the language, culture, and life in New York.

Like Kimberly, Jean Kwok's family also moved from China to the United States. Her family has also face many problems while adjusting to their new life just like in Kimberly's life in the book. Through her book, Jean is also trying to tell the story of many Asian immigrants who are caught between two culture. People who are trying to succeed in America, but are face with difficult obstacles along the way.

I am glad I came across with this book. I am finding Asian America Literature very interesting and heartfelt. If u are looking for something to do over the summer, well, read this book. You will not be disappointed.

  1. This book does sound very interesting. I too enjoy some Asian American literature as well as Latino literature. I have been reading "How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents" (I am nearly done with it). If you want to see a funny movie with Asian American actors, check out "Saving Face."

  2. I read one of Julia Alvarez short stories "Customs" from the book Iguana Dreams. The book is a combination of short stories by many Latino American writers. I will check the movie out. I do love Asian culture a lot. Thanks for the tip.
Yeah, the book is really good. I am just starting to read it and I am in love with it. I also recommend "Chinese Cinderella" by Adeline Yen Mah, "A step from heaven" by An Na, and if you get to find "1 liter of tears" by Aya Kito I would highly recommend to read it or at least watch the film. I believe the three books I mention are base on the true story of the corresponding author.
